Speechify vs. Speed Reading: Which Gets You Through the Book?

Two very different answers have emerged to the same complaint — I have more to read than time to read it.

One is to stop reading and start listening. Text-to-speech tools like Speechify convert the page to a voice and let you raise the playback rate until it is uncomfortable.

The other is to change how the text is presented to your eyes. RSVP shows one word at a time in a fixed position, removing the eye movements that ordinary reading spends most of its time on.

They are not competitors in the way the marketing implies. They fail in different places, and knowing where is the whole decision.

The ceiling on listening is not the software

Standard audiobook narration runs about 150 words per minute. Ordinary silent reading is faster than that — Brysbaert’s 2019 meta-analysis puts adult silent reading of English non-fiction at roughly 238 words per minute. So audio at 1× is already slower than just reading.

That is why every TTS app ships with a speed slider, and why the marketing numbers are large.

Where it actually breaks down is more interesting than a number. Comprehension of speech holds up well through moderate speed-ups and then degrades, and the degradation is not gradual for everyone — it tends to fall off a cliff somewhere past the point where the pauses between clauses disappear. Prosody is doing real work in comprehension: the rise and fall of a sentence tells you where the clause boundaries are. Compress the audio far enough and that information is destroyed even though every phoneme is still technically present.

The strong exception is worth knowing about. Experienced blind screen-reader users routinely operate at rates that are unintelligible to almost everyone else, with full comprehension. That is a trained skill built over years, and it is real evidence that the ceiling is not fixed — but it is not a ceiling you reach in a fortnight.

For most people, most of the time, useful listening tops out somewhere well short of what the slider allows.

The ceiling on RSVP is a different thing entirely

RSVP removes saccades — the jumps your eyes make along a line — and the return sweep back to the start of the next one. Those movements are not incidental; they consume a large share of reading time, and the return sweep in particular lands off-target often enough that it needs correcting.

Take them away and higher rates become available. But RSVP has a hard constraint of its own: you cannot go back. Ordinary reading regresses constantly — your eye flicks back to reread a clause you did not quite catch, and you barely notice doing it. RSVP presents a word and then it is gone.

This is why RSVP is not a general-purpose upgrade. On dense material where you need to reread — a proof, a contract, an unfamiliar technical argument — removing regression removes something you were relying on.

The pattern that holds up: listening degrades gracefully and you can let your attention drift back in. RSVP degrades abruptly — miss a stretch and it is simply gone. The first suits divided attention. The second demands undivided attention and pays you for it.

What each one is genuinely for

Listening wins whenever your eyes are busy. Driving, walking, cooking, the gym, a commute where you cannot look down. That is not a small category — it is hours a week that were previously unavailable for reading at all, and no visual method can touch it. It is also a serious accessibility tool, and for readers with visual impairments or certain reading disabilities it is not a convenience but the access route.

RSVP wins when you are sitting still and want to be finished. A report before a meeting. A backlog of articles. A non-fiction book whose argument you want without spending four evenings on it. You are giving it your full attention for a shorter time rather than partial attention for longer.

The honest summary is that listening converts dead time into reading time, and RSVP converts reading time into less reading time. Those are different problems and you probably have both.

The practical differences that decide it

Cost. TTS with good neural voices is a subscription, because generating that audio costs real money per hour. RSVP is arithmetic — it is showing you words you already have on a timer — which is why it can be free and why ReadKinetic is.

Your files. Ask what happens to the book. Cloud TTS generally means uploading your document to be processed. If that matters to you — medical notes, unpublished work, legal documents, anything under NDA — it matters a lot, and it is worth checking rather than assuming.

Retention. Neither method fixes memory. Reading something quickly and remembering it are separate problems, and going faster does nothing for the second one. That is worth its own discussion.

So which?

If the time you want back is time your eyes are already occupied — use TTS. Nothing else can reach that time.

If the time you want back is time spent sitting and reading, RSVP addresses the actual bottleneck, and it costs nothing to find out whether it suits you.

Most people who read a lot end up using both, for different hours of the day. That is not a compromise. It is just what the two tools are for.
