How I Read for Medical School Without Falling Behind
I built ReadKinetic because I was a medical student in Istanbul who kept not finishing his reading list. That is the whole origin story, and it is worth stating plainly before anything else, because it also explains what this post is not.
It is not a promise that you can read a pathology chapter at 700 words a minute and walk into an exam. You cannot. I have tried, and the only thing it produces is the pleasant sensation of having studied.
What follows is the distinction I eventually had to make: which reading is genuinely slow work, which reading is overhead pretending to be work, and what changed once I stopped treating the two the same way.
The reading is not one thing
The mistake I made for a year was treating “my reading” as a single undifferentiated pile with a single strategy: start at the top, go until tired, feel guilty.
It is at least three separate jobs.
First-pass learning of hard material. A mechanism you have never seen. A pathway with eleven steps. This is not reading in the sense of moving your eyes across words — it is construction, and it is supposed to be slow. If you are reading the coagulation cascade for the first time at any speed at all, you are not learning it, you are visiting it.
Re-reading things you have already understood once. Review passes. The chapter you read three weeks ago and have half-forgotten. Lecture transcripts covering material you sat through. This is the largest category by volume and the one where almost all my time was disappearing.
Triage. Papers you have to decide about. Guidelines you need one section of. Anything where the real question is does this matter to me rather than what does this say.
These need three different speeds, and the only one that deserves to be slow is the first.
What I refuse to read fast
Anything I am meeting for the first time that has structure I will need to reproduce.
There is no technique that gets around this. Comprehension of genuinely difficult material is limited by how fast you can build a model of it, not by how fast the words arrive. Speeding up the delivery of words to a brain that is still assembling step four of eleven does not help; it just means the words arrive and leave.
Speed reading advice tends to be silent about this, because the honest version is unglamorous: for the hardest 20% of your reading, the answer is to go slower and write things down. No app fixes that. Mine does not either.
I also do not use a speed reader for anything I need to memorise cold — drug doses, values, lists. That is not a reading problem, it is a retention problem, and the tool for retention is spaced repetition, not faster words. If you are choosing between building an Anki habit and buying a speed reading course, build the Anki habit. It is not close.
I learned this on pharmacology, which is the subject that punishes the approach most reliably. Mechanisms, receptor classes, interactions — material where every sentence depends on the one before it, and where a gap does not announce itself while you are reading. I ran a chapter fast the night before, felt like I had covered it, and discovered in the exam that I could recognise every term on the page and reconstruct almost none of it. Recognition is not recall, and reading quickly is very good at producing the first while feeling like the second.
What I read fast, and why it works
Everything in the second category. The re-reading.
Here is the thing that took me too long to notice: when I re-read a chapter I had already worked through, I was not doing the slow constructive work any more. The model was already built. I was checking it. But I was still reading at the speed the first pass needed, and the first pass had been slow for reasons that no longer applied.
Worse, most of that time was not going into the words at all. It was going into navigation.
Between 10 and 20 per cent of an average adult’s eye movements go backwards without any decision to re-read — regressions, triggered by a flicker of doubt, fatigue, or nothing at all. And every single line ends with a long jump back to the start of the next one, the return sweep, which undershoots often enough that one line transition is usually three movements rather than one.
None of that is comprehension. It is the overhead of finding the next word on a page. On a first pass through hard material it is a rounding error next to the thinking. On a fourth pass through material you already know, it is most of what you are doing.
RSVP removes it. The words come to you in one fixed position, so there is no line to sweep back to and nowhere for your eyes to drift. On review material I run it fast, and the comprehension cost is close to nothing, because I am confirming a structure rather than building one.
In practice that means two settings and not much in between. Review runs at around 450 words a minute, sometimes 500 on lecture transcripts, which are padded by nature. First-pass material I do not run through a speed reader at all — that is a pen-and-paper job. The middle setting I thought I would use constantly, some careful 300 that would let me learn faster, turned out not to exist. Either I already know the shape of the thing and can move, or I do not and no speed helps.
The part nobody tells students
The largest gain was not speed. It was finishing.
An unfinished chapter has a peculiar cost: you carry it. It sits on the list, it makes the next thing feel heavier, and you end up spending more energy on the ambient awareness of unread material than the material would have taken. Getting a review pass down from ninety minutes to thirty did not save me an hour so much as it removed a thing that would otherwise have been carried into the next day.
The related trick is knowing how long something will take before starting it. “Read chapter 12” is an open-ended threat. “Chapter 12 is 14,000 words, which is fifty minutes at my normal pace and half an hour at review speed” is a task you can put in an evening. I do this constantly now — it is why the site has a reading time calculator at all.
The clearest version of this was a stretch where I had fallen about two weeks behind on lectures — the kind of backlog that stops being a task and starts being a mood. Working through the transcripts at review speed, it came apart in a few evenings rather than the fortnight of guilt I had budgeted for. The reading had never been fourteen days of work. It had been a few hours of work sitting behind fourteen days of not starting.
The practical setup
Nothing here requires my app specifically, and most of it is not about apps at all.
Sort the pile before touching it. First-pass, review, and triage. Different speeds, and knowing which one you are doing is most of the benefit.
Put a number on the job before starting. Word count, not page count — a page is anywhere from 275 to 500 words depending on the book, which is why page-based estimates are useless for textbooks. The calculator does the arithmetic.
Slow means slow, with a pen. For the hard 20%, close everything else and write the structure out. If you are not producing something, you are visiting.
Fast means fast, on things you have already met. Review passes, transcripts, papers you are triaging. This is where the hours are hiding.
Retention is a separate problem. Spaced repetition for anything you need cold. Reading it again more times is not a plan.
