The short answer
For adults reading silently in English, the average is roughly 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 words per minute for fiction.
Those figures come from a 2019 meta-analysis by Marc Brysbaert, which pooled results across a large body of reading studies rather than relying on any single experiment.
